White House Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
